“Unconditional Love” by Joseph W. Wilkin is a short self-help book on spirituality and unconditional love. It is arranged in such a way that the reader must read in order, starting with the first chapter, “Truth,” and continue with “Attraction,” “Consciousness,” “Science,” etc. Wilkin discourages the reader from jumping around or reading ahead; “Unconditional Love” is a journey taken by both the author and reader together. While the author does refer to the Judeo-Christian bible and references God, I would not call this a Christian spiritual guidebook, but rather a simple spiritual guide that references language and terms to which we, as the reader, are probably already accustomed.
“Unconditional Love” does not advocate for a specific religion or belief, but rather encourages the reader to embark on an individual spiritual journey. The final few pages contain a “Questions and Statements” section where the author address specific questions people may have about “Unconditional Love,” such as why he focuses on certain aspects and not others. The author answers these questions openly and honestly, and it gives some more insight into the book.
I appreciate that Wilkin does not shy away from certain controversies, such as evolution vs. creationism, and offers a unique perspective, one that is not polarizing. This book does not set out to explain the mysteries of the universe, but rather how the reader can achieve self-love and a centered spirituality.
As a young adult who has grown up in a liberal but Catholic household, I found “Unconditional Love” by Joseph W. Wilkin to be relatable and relevant to my life and spiritual journey. It is a quick and simple read but with an infinite amount of wisdom and a refreshingly different perspective. Well-written, simple, easy to understand, and organized, I would recommend this book to anyone who is having a hard time or simply wishes to delve deeper into their own spiritual life and journey.
